Sudan’s Al Hilal Crowned Honorary Champions of Mauritanian League in Historic Guest Campaign

Al Hilal Omdurman of Sudan has been named honorary champions of the Mauritanian Premier League, marking a significant milestone for African football after an outstanding guest season that attracted the continent's attention.
A Symbol of Resilience Amid Crisis
With Sudanese domestic football suspended due to ongoing national unrest, FIFA and CAF granted special approval for Al Hilal and Al Merrikh to temporarily join the Mauritanian league. The move, coordinated with the Mauritanian Football Federation, aimed to help Sudanese clubs maintain match fitness and competitive rhythm during turbulent times.
The Honorary Title Secured
Al Hilal wrapped up their season with a 2-1 win over ASC Gendrim on Sunday. Goals from Ahmed Salem and Aime Tendeng sealed victory, capping an inspiring campaign that ended with the Sudanese giants topping the table—though only in honorary fashion.
FC Nouadhibou had already clinched the official 2024 Mauritanian league title on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Inter Nouakchott.
Reaction from the Club
Club president Hesham Hassan Al Subat praised the players and staff on Facebook:
“Warmest congratulations to the technical staff, players and Al Hilal supporters everywhere for this well-earned league title. This honor reflects tremendous effort, dedication and teamwork. We appreciate the collective work that brought this trophy home. Together, we aim to correct mistakes and raise performance levels in future competitions.”
More Than a Title
While not an official league victory, the honorary crown represents a powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and continental solidarity in African football.
