South Africa's Betway Premiership Fixtures Relocated After Damage to New Peter Mokaba Stadium
The upcoming Betway Premiership fixtures scheduled for this weekend in Polokwane, Limpopo, have been moved from the New Peter Mokaba Stadium to the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium after substantial damage was caused to the pitch during Makhadzi’s One Woman Show last Saturday.
John Mpe, the mayor of Polokwane municipality, declared that a comprehensive examination of the stadium revealed significant repairs are required to bring it up to professional football standards. This means that no games will be played at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium this weekend or into January 2025.
The Old Peter Mokaba Stadium will now host games that were originally scheduled to take place there, such as Sekhukhune FC vs. Marumo Gallants FC on Saturday and Magesi FC vs. Orlando Pirates FC on Sunday. To make this transfer and expedite the process of repairing the damaged field, the municipality is collaborating with all parties concerned.
While Mpe acknowledged the positive economic impact of Makhadzi’s concert, he condemned the lack of protective measures that led to the damage. He assured that the restoration process will begin next week, with an expected completion date in January 2025. The restoration project is estimated to cost around R1 million.
