Pitso Mosimane has weighed in South Africa's World Cup last-32 exit and the former coach said reaching the knockout stage is something the nation must be proud of.

Mosimane, who is reported to be interested in succeeding Hugo Broos at Bafana Bafana, said the national side must be brimming with pride for the ability to go past the group stage.

Canada defeated South Africa 1-0 last night in Los Angeles to book their place in the last-16 of this year's World Cup in historic match which saw both nations qualify for the knockout phase for the first time.

“It’s been a good ride, sweet sour taste. We can be proud that the boys have gone to the knockout stages,” Mosimane told Smash Sport.

“But we need more than that if we really looked at Canada – we didn’t look like we could not win but probably did not convince enough in our final third or final pass to say that we could’ve easily won.

“I don’t want to use the word disappointing but I would like to say what are we looking forward to.”

Hugo Broos appeared to have had a change of heart on whether he retires from South Africa or not but Mosimane's name is back in the reckoning for the Bafana job.
