Senegal draw their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Maputo

This was clearly not the start the Lions of Teranga had hoped for in these qualifiers for the next Africa Cup of Nations.

Facing Mozambique on Friday 25 September at the Zimpeto National Stadium, Senegal dominated but failed to win on the opening day of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Patrick Vieira’s side took the lead in the first half thanks to Nicolas Jackson. The Senegalese striker opened the scoring in the 32nd minute following an assist from Sima Abdallah, making it 1–0.

However, the Lions of Teranga were quickly pegged back by Mozambique’s Mambas before half-time. Geny Catamo equalised to level the score at 1–1.

After the break, the Senegalese were unable to find the resources needed to secure victory. The two teams fought a fierce battle, with neither managing to gain the upper hand. The Lions of Teranga therefore had to settle for a draw in their opening match of the race for qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
