“Everyone wants to beat us”: Despite the draw in Maputo, El Hadji Malick Diouf remains optimistic

Senegal began their qualifying campaign for the next Africa Cup of Nations with a draw against Mozambique.

Patrick Vieira’s side shared the points with the Mambas after a 1-1 draw on Friday 25 September at the Zimpeto National Stadium. Despite this result, El Hadji Malick Diouf believes the team’s morale remains high.

The Senegalese defender highlighted the difficulties the Lions of Teranga face when playing away from home on the continental stage. For El Hadji Malick Diouf, the point taken from Maputo remains a result to be reckoned with.

“I think the team spirit is good. In Africa, away matches aren’t easy, especially as Senegal are the team to beat. Everyone wants to beat us.

The main thing is not to lose. This draw isn’t a bad result, but we must try to stay focused for the next match, which will also be a tough one, because in Africa, every match is a tough one.”

Senegal are hoping to get back on track against Ethiopia on 29 September during matchday 2 of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
