On 14 June, the top 24 European national teams will begin their battle at UEFA Euro 2024 for the title of the continent's strongest team for the next four years.

The Dailysports team have put together a brief rundown of one of the participants in the upcoming European Championships - the Scottish national team.

What is Scotland's highest achievement at the European Championships?

Despite a fairly frequent appearance at the World Cups in the twentieth century, the Tartans first got to the European Championships as early as 1992.

At their first tournament, the Scots found themselves in a group with the Netherlands, Germany and the "united team", which included players from the former USSR. It was in a match with this team that the Scots won the first victory in the history of European Championships with a score of 3-0.

However, then "tartans" could not get out of the group, as well as at the next two tournaments: in 1996 and 2020 (although the Euro was held in 2021).

Who was included in the Scotland national team's bid for Euro 2024?

Tartan head coach Steve Clarke announced the preliminary 28-man squad on 22 May, but due to tournament regulations, he will have to reduce his European Championship bid to 26 players.

  • Defenders: Liam Cooper (Leeds United), Grant Hanley (Norwich), Jack Hendry (Al Attifaq), Scott McKenna (Copenhagen), Ross McCrorie (Bristol City), Ryan Porthos (Watford), Anthony Ralston (Celtic), Andrew Robertson (Liverpool), John Souttar (Rangers), Greg Taylor (Celtic), Kieran Tierney (Real Sociedad).
  • Midfielders: Stuart Armstrong (Southampton), Ryan Christie (Bournemouth), Billy Gilmour (Brighton) Ryan Jack (Rangers), John McGinn (Aston Villa), Callum McGregor (Celtic), Kenny McLean (Norwich), Scott McTominay (Manchester United).
  • Forwards: Che Adams (Southampton), Ben Doak (Liverpool), Lyndon Dykes (Queens Park Rangers), James Forrest (Celtic), Lawrence Shankland (Heart of Midlothian).

Who is the head coach of the Scotland national team?

Since May 2019, the Scotland national team has been managed by Steve Clarke. The 60-year-old has a background in English football, having worked with West Bromwich and Reading, but he returned to his homeland in 2017 to take charge of Kilmarnock, becoming the Scottish League Coach of the Season for the 2017/2018 season.

With the Scotland national team, he also managed to achieve success, leading the team to Euro 2020, which was the first major tournament for the Tartans in 23 years.

How did the Scotland national team qualify for Euro 2024?

The Tartans qualified for the tournament thanks to second place in Group A of the qualifying group, where Clarke's team's opponents were Spain, Norway, Sakartvelo and Cyprus. Scotland qualified for the tournament with only one loss to Furia Roja.

In total, the Tartans picked up five wins (one over Spain 2-0) and 17 points in the qualifying campaign.

What is the schedule of matches in Germany's group at Euro 2024?

The Scots have made it to Group A and the final tournament, where they will be joined by the tournament hosts Germans, as well as Switzerland and Hungary.
