Scaloni Reflects on Messi’s Leadership, Maradona’s Legacy and Argentina’s Rise

Lionel Scaloni opened up in a wide-ranging interview where he spoke candidly about his relationship with Lionel Messi, his admiration for Diego Maradona, and the emotional journey that led him to World Cup glory. According to Infobae, the Argentine coach revealed lesser-known aspects of Messi’s leadership and how his own coaching career began under heavy scrutiny.
Scaloni recalled Maradona’s 1993 arrival at Newell’s Old Boys, where he trained as a teenager. “The entire complex would stop to watch him,” he said. Addressing early criticism, he admitted: “It was fair. I hadn’t coached before. Even Maradona said so, and he was right.”
Now a world and two-time Copa América champion, Scaloni described working with Messi as “easy,” praising his competitiveness and clarity. “He has the will to win in his DNA,” he said, adding that Messi never interferes with tactics but thrives when surrounded by technically gifted teammates. “When he sees the team playing well, everything clicks.”
He compared Messi and Maradona, stating, “They’re different in personality, but both are true leaders.” He recalled the 2021 semifinal against Colombia, when an injured Messi insisted on playing through pain, a moment he believes defined his character.
When asked to choose between them, he admitted, “I pick Leo because I know him, but comparisons are pointless. Both could play in any era.” Reflecting on the final moments in Lusail after Montiel’s winning penalty, Scaloni said, “Seeing everyone running and celebrating—that image is one of the most beautiful memories I carry.”
