Ricky Pearsall, selected 31st overall in the first round of the NFL Draft from the University of Florida by the San Francisco 49ers, was signing autographs today before heading to Union Square, but his plans were abruptly interrupted by a hostile encounter.
According to the San Francisco Police Department, Pearsall fell victim to a robbery. An altercation occurred between Pearsall and a 17-year-old suspect, who is now under arrest. The assailant then drew a gun and shot him in the chest.
San Francisco Emergency Services reported receiving a 911 call at 3:38 PM local time (12:38 AM CET) and dispatched the necessary units to the corner of Geary and Grant Streets.
Footage circulating online shows that Pearsall was not the only one injured. The videos depict another individual accompanying him into the ambulance. The football player, despite his injuries, managed to get into the ambulance without assistance from medical personnel.
According to ABC San Francisco, Pearsall’s condition is described as critical but stable. The suspected shooter is also in custody and currently hospitalized.
Following the incident, the 49ers released an official statement on social media:
"San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was the victim of an attempted robbery and shooting this afternoon.
He sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and is in critical but stable condition. We ask that his privacy be respected during this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and the entire Pearsall family."
Shortly after news of the incident broke, his teammate Deebo Samuel posted the following message on his social media page:
"He's okay. Thank God."
The 49ers' first game of the new season is scheduled for September 10th, and it remains uncertain when the rookie will be able to make his debut.
