River and Boca Eye Tagliafico as World Cup Reinforcements

River Plate and Boca Juniors are reportedly considering a move for Nicolás Tagliafico ahead of the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, aiming to strengthen their squads for the high-profile tournament. According to El Cronista, both Argentine powerhouses are closely monitoring the situation of the Argentine national team defender, who could leave Olympique Lyon as a free agent this June.
Tagliafico’s contract with the French club expires on June 30, and no renewal offer has been presented so far. This opens the door for River and Boca to swoop in, especially since FIFA will allow clubs to register short-term signings specifically for the Club World Cup from June 1 to 10.
River coach Marcelo Gallardo is said to be looking for a replacement for Marcos Acuña, while Boca is also exploring options to boost their left flank. However, any move will depend on Tagliafico’s willingness to return to Argentina — something he has consistently hesitated about.
The fullback, who rose to prominence with Banfield and later Independiente, has made it clear that if he ever returns to Argentine football, it would likely be with Banfield, the club where he began his career.
Both clubs are exploring temporary signings solely for the Club World Cup, with River reportedly also considering Exequiel Palacios as a short-term option. While neither side expects to win the tournament, a strong showing on the global stage is seen as a valuable opportunity to boost prestige and morale.
