Relebohile Mofokeng goal wins Orlando Pirates this season’s Carling Cup trophy for the first time in their history

Relebohile Mofokeng’s extra-time goal won Orlando Pirates the Carling Cup Knockout final match against Marumo Gallants this evening.

Mofokeng scored his goal at the stroke of extra time interval to send the Pirates supporters at the Peter Mokaba Stadium into delirium and win his side the trophy on offer.

It was clear from the outset that Gallants were looking to take the game to penalties.

Mbekezeli Mbokazi, the Pirates defender, was playing his last game for the Sea Robbers as he is on his way to the USA for his move to MLS side Chicago Fire.

The USA side announced his signing in midweek in a deal which was reported to be worth R50-million.

And he was defending with aplomb for Pirates in this game.

In truth, Alexandre Latiffe’s Marumo fought gallantly throughout the game and it did not look like they will break as they held on until the end of regulation time.

Latiffe’s plan was clear defend and take the game into penalties. But it was also clear that at some stage they will break.

Katlego Otladisa and Philip Ndlondlo – former Pirates players – were the go to players for the ball for the side from Bloemfontein.

Pirates took their time in their build up and when they were entering into Marumo’s half and Mofokeng’s goal was a result of that patience build up to win this trophy for the first time in front of a sold out crowd in Polokwane.
