The match between Liverpool and Arsenal in the ninth round of the English Premier League has been overshadowed by refereeing controversy. In the first half alone, the hosts twice appealed for penalties, but referee Andy Madley waved play on both times without awarding a spot kick.

One incident sparked a particularly fierce reaction. In Liverpool's view, Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber pulled Alexander Isak's shirt inside the penalty area, preventing the Swedish striker from reaching the ball. Despite the hosts' protests, the referee pointed away from the spot.

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola also reacted emotionally to the referee's decisions. The manager even showed the official where he believed a foul had been committed inside the penalty area.

As a result, the hosts went into halftime without being awarded a penalty, while Arsenal continued to lead 1-0. The only goal of the first half was scored by Kai Havertz in the 16th minute following a pass from Declan Rice.
