A fair decision? The Premier League explained why Madueke was not sent off for a headbutt!
In the tense closing stages of the Premier League clash between Liverpool and Arsenal (0:1) at Anfield, a controversial incident involving Noni Madueke and Alexis Mac Allister took center stage.
Details: During a heated verbal exchange and a “head-to-head” confrontation, the home side’s midfielder went down on the pitch in an attempt to get the Arsenal player sent off.
The Premier League’s official match center and VAR promptly reviewed the incident for a possible act of violent conduct. According to the refereeing team, there was indeed minor contact, but it did not reach the threshold of “forceful, aggressive or brutal” conduct required for a red card. As a result, Madueke avoided a sending-off, having earlier received only a yellow card in the match.
The Argentine midfielder’s behavior drew fierce criticism from football pundits. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher openly branded Mac Allister’s simulation and fall a “disgrace,” stressing that attempts to get an opponent sent off damage the game and must be firmly stamped out by football authorities.
The match ended in a narrow 1:0 victory for Arsenal, and after nine rounds the London side sits top of the table with 24 points, while Liverpool are fifth on 15 points.
