Pope Francis has called for a halt to all military conflicts for the duration of the Olympics

Pope Francis has called for a halt to all military conflicts during the Paris Olympic Games.
On Sunday, Pope Francis expressed hope that the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris will provide an opportunity for warring countries to respect the ancient Greek tradition and establish a truce during the Games.
“According to ancient tradition, let the Olympics be an opportunity to establish a truce in wars, demonstrating a sincere will for peace,” Francis said during the Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square.
I hope this event can be a sign of the inclusive peace we want to build and that athletes can become ambassadors of peace and valuable role models for the youth.
Let us not forget the martyrs of Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Myanmar, and many other countries at war. Let us remember that war is a defeat,” Pope Francis concluded.
The opening ceremony of the 33rd Olympic Games will take place in Paris on July 26, featuring 205 delegations of athletes parading on more than 80 boats along the Seine.
