Platense Reeling From Coaching Duo Departure as Fans Hope for Palermo's Return

Just days after leading Platense to its first official championship, Favio Orsi and Sergio Gómez shocked Argentine football by resigning from their roles as head coaches. The duo, who had contracts until the end of the year, decided to step down after achieving what they described as their ultimate goal.
According to journalist Germán García Grova, the pair felt “emptied” after winning the Copa de la Liga on June 1, when Platense beat Huracán 1-0 in Santiago del Estero. Despite the glory and a record of 25 wins, 17 draws, and 15 losses, they chose not to continue the project.
The club’s president, Sebastián Ordoñez, expressed his disappointment in an interview with Radio La Red: “I’m still shocked. We always had a good relationship. I’m hurt and sad. It’s not what I wanted.” He even offered them 12 hours to reconsider, but the decision was final.
Beyond the statistics, the departure leaves an emotional void. “We achieved the goal together. There’s no anger, just sadness,” Ordoñez said.
In the aftermath, one name is gaining traction among fans and the media: Martín Palermo. The Boca Juniors legend, who led Platense to a runner-up finish in 2023, is currently without a team after parting ways with Olimpia in April. He appeared on ESPN shortly before the announcement, and Ordoñez acknowledged the rumors: “He’s a friend. We’re hearing a lot of names.”
No official decisions have been made, but the idea of Palermo’s return has already stirred excitement in Vicente López.
