Paraguay Takes Center Stage as FIFA Hosts Historic Congress in Luque

Paraguay is in the global football spotlight this week as it hosts a FIFA Ordinary Congress for the first time, independent of any World Cup event. According to Versus, the gathering runs from May 12 to 15 at the Conmebol Convention Center in Luque and brings together delegates from all 211 member associations and the six continental confederations.

The FIFA Congress is the organization’s highest decision-making body, with each national federation holding one vote. This year’s agenda includes the presentation and approval of annual reports and budget plans, along with discussions on proposals submitted by member federations. The main session will take place on Thursday, May 15.

This edition coincides with the 100th anniversary of Paraguay’s entry into FIFA as a full member, adding historical significance to the event. Over 2,000 guests, including high-profile football figures, are expected to attend, placing the country at the heart of the sport’s global dialogue.

Beyond the sporting and institutional significance, the Congress is projected to generate approximately $20 million in revenue for Paraguay’s hospitality, tourism, and transport sectors. Complementary activities are also underway, including the inauguration of the “FIFA Arena” at a local school in Luque, part of FIFA’s worldwide effort to enhance sports infrastructure in education.
