The long-awaited showdown between the reigning champions of Europe and South America has been officially called off.
Details: UEFA has announced the cancellation of the 2026 Finalissima, which was set to feature Argentina and Spain. The reason for the collapse of this prestigious tournament was a complete breakdown in negotiations between European officials and the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
In its official statement, UEFA emphasized that it made every effort to save the match. The first option was to hold the game in Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium with an equal ticket split between fans, but the Argentine side categorically refused. Even the suggestion to stage the Finalissima as a two-legged tie (in Madrid and Buenos Aires) before the major tournaments of 2028 was rejected by Argentina.
UEFA's final proposal was to find any neutral stadium in Europe to play the fixture on either March 27 or 30, but no agreement could be reached. The Argentinians insisted on holding the match exclusively on March 31 or even after the World Cup. Since Spain already had other fixtures scheduled for those dates, a compromise became technically impossible.
Reminder: Spain midfielder Rodri was detained by police for spying on neighbors with a drone.
