Nacional and Peñarol Suffer Historic Poor Start in Uruguayan League Nacional and Peñarol Suffer Historic Poor Start in Uruguayan League

Nacional and Peñarol, the two most iconic clubs in Uruguay, are enduring a historically poor start to the 2025 Uruguayan Championship. After nine rounds, both teams sit in mid-table, a scenario never seen before in the professional era. According to ESPN, it’s the first time both clubs have simultaneously struggled this much at the beginning of a league campaign.

Peñarol's darkest start came in 1983 when they went winless in their first nine matches. Ironically, they reached the Copa Libertadores final that year. More recently, in 1991, a dismal run of results led to the resignation of legendary coach César Luis Menotti after a crushing 4-1 defeat to Huracán Buceo.

Nacional, meanwhile, had its own nightmare during the 2006-2007 Clausura. Under coach Daniel Carreño, the team failed to win any of its first five matches, managing only two points and finishing 11th in the standings. Similar patterns of poor form have plagued both teams under other managers, including Diego Alonso and Jorge "Polilla" Da Silva at Peñarol, whose early results often led to early exits and criticism.

Now, both giants are again in crisis, facing the pressure of living up to their rich legacies. With fan expectations high and the stakes never lower, Nacional and Peñarol must turn things around swiftly to avoid a season that could go down as one of the worst in their storied histories
