Mourinho drops a Clásico bomb! Valverde set for a stunning new role against Barcelona
José Mourinho appears ready to spring a major tactical surprise in the biggest match of the weekend.
Details: According to Diario AS, Federico Valverde is set to start tonight's El Clásico against Barcelona as a right winger, while Denzel Dumfries will take the right-back position for Real Madrid.
The decision represents a significant change from Madrid's recent setup. Valverde had been used at right-back in four consecutive matches, with Mourinho repeatedly trusting the Uruguayan in defence despite having natural options such as Dumfries and Trent Alexander-Arnold available.
AS had already identified the winger experiment as one of Mourinho's three possible tactical plans for the trip to Camp Nou. In that system, Valverde can stay wide or rotate inside with a midfielder, giving Madrid additional movement on the right flank while Dumfries provides greater defensive protection behind him.
The choice is particularly striking because the right side had been one of the biggest selection dilemmas ahead of the Clásico. Mourinho now appears ready to move his captain further forward rather than keep him in the defensive role in which he impressed during Madrid's recent run.
It is worth noting that Valverde played at right-back in four straight matches before the Clásico. In Real Madrid's 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig, he created three chances, completed 81 passes and won four tackles.
Reminder: New law at Real Madrid! Mourinho makes a major decision before El Clasico
