Mamelodi Sundowns defender Mothobi Mvala has taken a moment to thank the club’s loyal supporters, playfully addressing the long-running joke about their fanbase size.

The Bafana Bafana star, speaking at the announcement of Carling Black Label as Sundowns’ sponsor for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, acknowledged the social media taunts from rival fans. Known for mocking Sundowns' perceived lack of supporters—often symbolized by the number "57"—opponents frequently highlight the team’s lower match attendances.

However, Mvala made it clear that the players deeply appreciate their fans, no matter the numbers.

"The fans’ support means everything to us—it drives us and lifts our spirits," said Mvala, who recently returned from injury. "I know they usually leave the stadium happy, and whether people say there are ‘57’ of them or whatever, we are truly grateful.

"They must know we value them; without them, football wouldn’t be the same. We need their energy, and we thank them for always showing up, rain or shine, singing for us even when results don’t go our way. We hope they keep supporting the club the same way."

Mvala’s words were reflected in the strong turnout at Loftus Versfeld last Saturday, where Sundowns fans packed the stands despite a 1-1 draw against Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions League first-leg final. The decisive second leg will take place this Sunday at Cairo’s 30 June Stadium.

Following the Champions League finale, Sundowns will head to the USA for the Club World Cup, starting June 17 with a Group F clash against South Korea’s Ulsan Hyundai. They will also face Brazil’s Fluminense and Germany’s Borussia Dortmund in the group stage.
