The espionage scandal is gaining momentum in England.
Details: According to Ben Jacobs, Middlesbrough has officially appealed to the English Football League, demanding Southampton’s exclusion from the Championship playoff final for promotion to the Premier League. As previously reported, the reason is an ongoing “espionage” case: the Saints are accused of secretly observing and recording Middlesbrough’s training session ahead of this crucial league showdown.
In their statement, Middlesbrough expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Disciplinary Commission’s decision, which did not allow the club direct involvement in the proceedings.
“We regret this outcome, as we are the directly affected party and possess irrefutable evidence of events that have undermined fair sporting competition,” the club emphasized.
Middlesbrough officials are adamant that spying on a closed training session before such a decisive match constitutes a violation of the fundamental principles of professional ethics.
According to the club’s management, the only appropriate sanction in this situation should be Southampton’s disqualification from the Championship playoff final. Middlesbrough is calling on the EFL to protect the integrity of the game as a regulator and to set a precedent that would deter any attempts to gain an unfair advantage in the race for Premier League promotion.
Reminder: The Championship final could be postponed.
