Messi Reportedly Wants Gerardo Martino as Coach If He Returns to Newell’s

Lionel Messi’s potential return to Newell’s Old Boys in 2026 has taken a new twist. Former striker Maximiliano “Chanchi” Estévez revealed that if the Argentine superstar does come back to Rosario, he would likely ask for Gerardo Martino to join him as head coach. Speaking to AZZ, Estévez said, “If he comes, I think he’ll want Tata to come too.”
Messi’s future remains uncertain as his current contract with Inter Miami expires in December. With the FIFA Club World Cup around the corner, he has yet to sign an extension, fueling speculation about a homecoming to the club where his football journey began.
Estévez also touched on a growing tension between Messi and Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham. “He’s a bit annoyed with Beckham over Martino’s departure, and now there’s talk about Mascherano leaving too. That didn’t sit well with him,” he said.
Newell’s, meanwhile, is enjoying a strong spell under Cristian Fabbiani, whose recent contract renewal may complicate any potential reunion with Martino.
Club president Ignacio Astore took a measured stance in comments to Cadena 3. “Right now, it’s far away. It doesn’t just depend on him. There are family matters, schooling, and contracts. But when it’s possible, he’ll come,” he said.
With Ángel Di María already heading back to Rosario Central, another homecoming by Messi would ignite unprecedented passion — and perhaps mark the perfect final chapter for Argentina’s golden generation.
