MEO Doubles Down on Universidad de Chile Stadium Proposal, Talks Held with Cerrillos Mayor

Chilean presidential hopeful Marco Enríquez-Ominami has once again stirred debate by reviving Universidad de Chile’s long-standing dream of building their own stadium. Speaking on the YouTube show Rayando el CDA, MEO confirmed he has discussed the idea with the mayor of Cerrillos and club officials, pushing forward what he calls a realistic public-private infrastructure project.
The controversy began when MEO announced on social media that if he gathers 10,000 signatures by May 24—the club’s anniversary—he would formally pledge before a notary to support a stadium project for Universidad de Chile, aiming for completion by 2030. The move sparked mixed reactions from fans, some of whom saw it as opportunistic electoral pandering.
Defending the proposal, Enríquez-Ominami said the plan involves a mix of public oversight and private financing. “The State sets the rules, the private sector brings the funds and hires people. I want to create a million jobs,” he stated. He added that as a self-declared supporter of the club, he would pursue the project passionately, but would also back stadiums for other teams if elected.
He pointed to Cerrillos as the most viable location, noting prior talks with the municipality but lamenting the lack of political will in past administrations. “The money isn’t the problem. The issue is finding the right site,” he emphasized.
While the proposal has drawn backlash—even from some within the club—MEO remains undeterred, blending football fervor and political ambition in a message that has clearly hit a nerve among Universidad de Chile supporters.
