Insigne and Bernardeschi Released by Toronto FC

Toronto FC have officially ended their high-profile Italian era. On Canada Day, the club confirmed the termination of Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi’s contracts, using both of their available buyouts.
The move ends a disappointing chapter for TFC, which saw the team fail to make the MLS playoffs in all three seasons with the Euro 2020 winners. Insigne, signed from Napoli in 2022 on a record $60 million deal, never delivered the expected impact and scored just 15 goals in 66 appearances. Bernardeschi, more consistent on the pitch, had 4 goals and 3 assists this year and is now reportedly in talks with Bologna.
General Manager Jason Hernandez thanked both players, citing mutual agreement on the timing of their departures. Toronto now has two open Designated Player slots as they look to rebuild. TFC visit NYCFC on Thursday and will host Atlanta United on July 12 in their first home game of the post-Italian era.
