One of Central America’s oldest football rivalries takes center stage again as Honduras and El Salvador face off this Saturday at Houston’s Shell Energy Stadium in their second Group B match of the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup. As OneFootball reported, this will be just their third-ever meeting in Gold Cup history, with Honduras winning both previous encounters.

Honduras enters the match reeling from a historic 6-0 loss to Canada—their heaviest defeat in the tournament’s history. El Salvador, meanwhile, is still searching for a win after a goalless draw with Curaçao in their opener.

The recent record between the two nations has been closely contested. In their last four matches across all competitions, each side has claimed one victory, with two draws. Their most recent clash was a 1-1 friendly in March 2024 at the same venue, with Brayan Gil and Bryan Róchez on the scoresheet.

In Gold Cup play, however, Honduras holds the edge. They won 1-0 in 2013 with a stoppage-time goal by Jorge Claros, and dominated 4-0 in 2019 thanks to strikes from Jorge Álvarez, Rubilio Castillo, Bryan Acosta, and Emilio Izaguirre.

El Salvador’s last competitive win over Honduras came nearly 11 years ago, a 1-0 victory in the 2014 Copa Centroamericana via a goal from Richard Menjívar.

Across 75 total meetings, Honduras leads the all-time series with 38 wins to El Salvador’s 17. But on Saturday, both teams face a different pressure: stay alive in the tournament, or risk early elimination. The rivalry continues—with pride and survival on the line.
