“He’ll be by our side,” says Pape Thiaw, confirming Edouard Mendy’s return despite his withdrawal from the match against Belgium
The Lions of Teranga goalkeeper has rejoined the Senegalese squad but will not, however, be available for the match against the Red Devils in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup.
Having sustained an injury during the group stage of the current World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, Edouard Mendy had travelled to his club in Saudi Arabia to undergo further medical tests. But after a round trip, the 34-year-old goalkeeper has rejoined the Senegalese squad in the United States.
Although he will not be able to play, Edouard Mendy will be able to support his team-mates against Belgium on 1 July in the round of 32, said Pape Thiaw.
“Edouard Mendy went back to see his club’s doctors for further tests. He has returned with the squad. Although he won’t be fit to play, he’ll be by our side. We hope to win so that he can join us for the rest of the tournament.”
