“Every coach has their own method”: David Pagou defends his choices
Ahead of the friendly clash against Côte d’Ivoire on 3 October, the Cameroonian manager spoke about his philosophy and working methods.
David Pagou was keen to assert his identity and independence in his choices. The Indomitable Lions manager fully stands by his approach despite differing opinions.
“Every manager has his own method, his own philosophy, his own way of doing things. Together with my staff, we’ve selected players who suit us. We’re maintaining continuity and will continue to follow our own methods. We won’t base our decisions on other people’s choices, otherwise we’ll lose our identity. We select players who fit in with our project.”
David Pagou also reflected on his team selection, pointing out that every match has its own demands. He emphasised his commitment to opening up the squad to all Cameroonian talent and highlighted the development of the squad since he was appointed manager.
“Every match has its own circumstances, every match has its own starting XI. There are many Cameroonians playing abroad; we need to show them that the doors to the national team are open, wherever they may be. We’re trying to get closer to our preferred starting XI because, as you know, we took charge of the team less than a year ago, but we’re getting closer to that preferred starting XI.”
