Espanyol has returned to La Liga after just one season
On June 23, the final participant of the Spanish La Liga for the 2024/25 season was determined. The coveted spot in the elite division was secured by Espanyol, who triumphed over Real Oviedo in the promotion playoff final.
The Catalans finished fourth in the Segunda División season and earned the opportunity to try their luck in the playoffs. In the semifinal, Gonzalez's men defeated Sporting Gijón over two legs. In the final, they faced Real Oviedo, who had not played in La Liga since 2001. Espanyol narrowly lost the first leg but secured victory in the return match on their home turf, thanks to two goals from Javier Puado at the end of the first half.
Thus, the Catalan club returned to the elite division of Spanish football after just one year of absence. It is worth noting that earlier, Leganés and Valladolid also secured promotion to La Liga. These three teams will replace the main disappointments of the past campaign: Cádiz, Almería, and Granada.
