The highly anticipated Chilean Superclásico between Universidad de Chile and Colo Colo, scheduled for this Sunday at the Estadio Nacional, may be suspended due to the tragic events during Colo Colo’s Copa Libertadores match against Fortaleza, according to Infobae. The game was halted after a pitch invasion sparked by the deaths of two fans in a stampede outside the Monumental stadium.
Chile’s Minister of Security, Luis Cordero, initially confirmed the match would proceed but clarified it would be subject to a final safety review. “If the evaluation is not positive, the game won’t take place,” he said. The two victims—a young woman aged 18 and a 13-year-old boy—were reportedly crushed by a metal gate during the crowd surge. A police riot control vehicle may have exacerbated the incident. Prosecutors have opened an investigation, and one officer has already been named a suspect.
Renowned journalist Fernando Tapia stated on Radio Pauta that Chilean police have submitted a negative security report recommending the match’s cancellation. “We’re on the verge of suspension,” he declared. The ANFP, Chile’s football authority, has already moved to hold other matches behind closed doors as a precautionary measure.
If confirmed, this would be the second Superclásico suspended in 2025, after January’s Supercopa was postponed for similar reasons. Tensions remain high: Colo Colo is under pressure in its centennial year, while Universidad de Chile hasn’t won in three league matches. The ANFP is expected to make an official announcement soon regarding the fate of Chile’s most heated rivalry.
