Chicago and San Jose Lead the Way to the 2025 U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals


Chicago Fire and San Jose Earthquakes were the first clubs to book their place among the final eight of the 2025 U.S. Open Cup, according to the tournament’s official website. Chicago delivered a clinical 3-1 win over New England Revolution in Providence, scoring three goals from just four shots while dominating possession with 63%. Gregg Berhalter’s side looked determined to end his long-standing drought in the competition.
San Jose, meanwhile, needed 116 minutes and 29 attempts to edge past Portland Timbers 1-0 in the only match that went to extra time on Tuesday. Jack Skahan scored the decisive goal off a Mark-Anthony Kaye assist. With the win, Bruce Arena’s squad reached their first semifinal since 2017.
Wednesday brought six more dramatic fixtures. D.C. United and New York Red Bulls advanced via penalty shootouts after 120-minute stalemates. In D.C.’s case, debutant goalkeeper Jordan Farr was the hero, saving four penalties after coming on specifically for the shootout. Minnesota United came from behind to beat St. Louis CITY SC 3-2 with a late brace from Anthony Markanich, while Nashville SC secured a 3-2 victory over Orlando thanks to Wyatt Meyer’s first professional goal in the 79th minute.
Philadelphia Union avoided an upset with a dominant 4-1 win over USL Championship side Pittsburgh Riverhounds, who nonetheless earned a $50,000 prize for being the last second-division team standing. Austin FC wrapped up the round with a 3-1 triumph over Houston Dynamo in a fiery Texas derby that saw red cards on both sides.
On Thursday, the quarterfinal draw was announced. In the East bracket, Philadelphia Union will host New York Red Bulls, while Nashville SC welcomes D.C. United. In the West, Minnesota United will play Chicago Fire at Allianz Field, and San Jose Earthquakes will host Austin FC at PayPal Park. The semifinals are scheduled for September 16–17, and the final, set for October 1, will grant the winner a spot in the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup.
