Michael Carrick's Manchester United have suffered another painful blow — this time their collapse ended a cup run.

Details: Manchester United were knocked out of the EFL Cup after a dramatic 3-2 home defeat to Brighton in the third round. The Red Devils appeared to be in complete control after a dream start at Old Trafford: Shea Lacey opened the scoring in the eighth minute on his first senior start, and Mason Mount doubled the advantage less than a minute later.

Brighton refused to surrender. Charalampos Kostoulas pulled one back before half-time, completely changing the mood of the match and giving the visitors a route back into the tie.

After the break, Pascal Gross made it 2-2 before Maxim De Cuyper completed the stunning comeback. United, who had been two goals ahead inside the opening ten minutes, were unable to respond and eventually suffered a 3-2 defeat.

The result means Manchester United are already out of the Carabao Cup at the third-round stage and adds further pressure on Carrick after an inconsistent start to the season. It is worth noting that even before this cup tie Brighton had won seven of their previous 11 meetings with Manchester United in all competitions.
