A new diamond for Carrick! Manchester United academy gem scores eight minutes into first start

Shea Lacey needed only a few minutes to turn his first Manchester United start into a statement.

Details: Michael Carrick handed the 19-year-old academy graduate his first senior start in Manchester United's EFL Cup third-round clash with Brighton at Old Trafford. Lacey repaid that trust almost immediately, opening the scoring in the eighth minute. Fabrizio Romano highlighted the youngster's emotional celebration: after finding the net, Lacey grabbed the Manchester United shirt and kissed the club badge.

Importantly, this was Lacey's first start for Manchester United rather than his senior debut. The winger first appeared for the senior side as a substitute against Aston Villa in December 2025 and had already collected several competitive appearances before being named in Carrick's starting XI against Brighton.

The goal was another major step in the youngster's breakthrough. Lacey had already found the net for the first team during pre-season, scoring in the 5-0 victory over Rosenborg in July, but his strike against Brighton was his first competitive goal at senior level. The badge-kissing celebration made the moment even more memorable for the Old Trafford crowd.

It is worth noting that Lacey was born on April 14, 2007 and came through Manchester United's academy. According to the club's official profile, he became the 256th different academy graduate to represent the first team when he made his senior debut in December 2025.
