Carlos Vela Announces Retirement, Becomes LAFC’s First Official Club Ambassador

Carlos Vela has officially retired from professional football, ending a storied 19-year career that saw him shine in Europe and cement his legacy as a Major League Soccer icon. The 35-year-old Mexican forward made the announcement via social media after months of inactivity following his contract’s expiration with LAFC.
Vela, the first designated player in LAFC history, will now take on a new role as the club’s inaugural ambassador. To honor his legacy, the team will host “Carlos Vela Night” on September 21 at BMO Stadium when LAFC faces Real Salt Lake. The tribute recognizes his immense contributions: 165 appearances, 80 goals, 40 assists, and titles including the 2022 MLS Cup and two Supporters’ Shields.
Vela was instrumental in shaping LAFC from its debut season in 2018, becoming the face and soul of the franchise. “Helping build LAFC and win trophies was one of the highlights of my career,” Vela said. General manager John Thorrington added, “Carlos was more than a player—he was our captain, our identity, and our promise fulfilled.
