Cameroon Women Return Home After Historic First WAFCON 2026 Title
Cameroon erupted in celebration on Monday as thousands of fans gathered in Yaoundé to welcome the Indomitable Lionesses home following their historic Women’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph.
The national team returned from Morocco after producing a commanding 3–0 victory over Malawi in Sunday’s final to lift the WAFCON trophy for the first time in the country’s history.
Supporters gathered at Yaoundé International Airport long before the team’s arrival, creating a carnival-like atmosphere filled with Cameroonian flags, team jerseys and phones raised to capture the special moment.
The Lionesses arrived shortly after 1 p.m. on a specially chartered Camair flight and were greeted by thousands of jubilant supporters, government representatives, military personnel and traditional dance groups.
The celebrations did not end at the airport. The players later embarked on a victory parade through the streets of Yaoundé, with huge crowds lining the roads to catch a glimpse of the new African champions as they proudly displayed the WAFCON trophy.
Cameroon’s success is even more remarkable given the team’s difficult route to the tournament. The Lionesses had initially missed out on qualification before a decision to increase the competition from 12 to 16 teams opened the door for their participation.
