Benin’s Veteran Goalkeeper Yoann Djidonou Bids Farewell to Football on His Birthday

After more than 30 years in football, Yoann Djidonou will play the final match of his professional career on Saturday, May 17, for SO Romorantin in France’s National 3. Fittingly, the farewell game will also mark his 25th appearance of the season—and take place on his birthday.
“Time to Turn the Page”
In an emotional announcement posted on social media on May 14, the Beninese international said:
“It’s time for me to turn the page and announce the end of my career. This decision was not easy... With a heavy heart, I have chosen to bring an end to this journey that has shaped the man I have become.”
A Legacy of Dedication
Trained in France, Djidonou built his career on discipline and consistency, earning respect both at club level and internationally.
For Benin, he was capped 20 times, representing the national team in:
- Two Africa Cup of Nations (2008, 2010)
- U-20 AFCON
- U-20 FIFA World Cup
Because of his leadership, loyalty, and professionalism, Djidonou has become a symbol of excellence in Beninese football.
For one of West Africa's quiet stalwarts between the posts, his retirement is the end of an incredible adventure and the start of a new one.
