Ander Herrera Suffers Third Injury Since Joining Boca Juniors

Ander Herrera’s Argentine adventure continues to be plagued by injuries. The Spanish midfielder suffered yet another muscular setback on Sunday during Boca Juniors’ 2-0 loss to Newell’s Old Boys. While the club is awaiting official tests, early signs point to a quad tear in his right leg—the third such injury in just two months since his January arrival.
Herrera entered the match at halftime but was forced off just five minutes later after feeling discomfort. Without signaling the bench, he walked off on his own, visibly upset. Cameras caught him covering his face with his shirt and breaking down in tears on the bench. Exequiel Zeballos replaced him shortly afterward.
Spanish media were quick to react. Marca, AS, and Mundo Deportivo all featured the incident prominently, describing his tenure at Boca as a “calvario” and highlighting his emotional exit. El Periódico de Aragón, which has followed his career since his Zaragoza days, noted the string of muscular issues that have plagued the 35-year-old.
This marks his third muscular injury since joining Boca: the first came in the opening match of the Apertura, sidelining him for five games; the second occurred after a strong performance against Central Córdoba. Though he recovered during the FIFA break, Sunday’s match saw him return only briefly before exiting again.
With the Superclásico against River Plate looming on April 27, Herrera’s availability is now uncertain. He’s played in just 7 of Boca’s 14 matches this season, falling far short of expectations.
