An English cricket club has been fined £100,000 due to racism allegations
An investigation into systemic racism at Essex County Cricket Club, spanning nine years, has concluded.
Details: According to the Daily Mail, the club has been fined £100,000. Half of the financial penalty imposed by the Cricket Discipline Commission has been suspended for two years. The racism and discrimination occurred between 2001 and 2010.
The independent investigation, conducted last year, was based on the testimonies of three former players. One of them was nicknamed "The Bomber" due to his South Asian heritage, while another was taunted with bananas because he was Black.
Quote: "The racism that took place at Essex County Cricket Club over many years was abhorrent, and the testimonies of those who were subjected to such abuse are deeply disturbing.
They showed immense courage by speaking out, and I hope this prosecution helps ensure that no one else suffers in the same way and that racism of this kind never becomes normalized," said Dave Lewis, interim director of the Cricket Regulator.
Reminder: Javier Tebas emphasized that neither Spain nor football are inherently racist, and such incidents, when they occur, are isolated and individual cases.
