América and Toluca to Meet in Liga MX Final for First Time in 54 Years

The 2025 Clausura Final will revive a rare historical matchup, as América and Toluca face off for the Mexican league title for only the second time ever. As Infobae reports, the last time these two giants clashed in a Liga MX final was back in the 1970-71 season.
In that series, América lifted their second league championship after defeating Toluca 2-0 in the second leg at Estadio Azteca, following a scoreless draw in the opener. The title came during a pivotal shift in Mexican football: it was the first tournament played under the newly introduced liguilla (playoff) format, established to boost attendance and TV ratings following the 1970 World Cup.
Despite their consistent presence in top-flight football and multiple appearances in other finals—including the 1989 Campeón de Campeones and the 2006 Concacaf Champions Cup—América and Toluca had not met again for the league trophy until now.
This season, América arrives as reigning three-time champions, while Toluca finished atop the regular-season standings. The final’s first leg will be held Thursday, May 22 at Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes, with the decisive return leg on Sunday, May 25 at Estadio Nemesio Diez.
