After a difficult start to the season, the International Football Association (FIFA) has praised Egypt's comeback under national coach Hossam Hassan, calling it a timely turnaround. Hassan is seen to be able to guide the Pharaohs back to their heyday and guarantee a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to an article on FIFA's official website.
Egypt's early elimination from the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a poor showing that featured three straight group-stage draws was the high point of the team's difficult tenure under Portuguese coach Rui Vitória. As a result, Hossam Hassan was appointed in February and Vitória was fired.
Hassan established himself right away, leading Egypt to a successful AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign. Egypt guaranteed early qualifying with strong results, including a 4-0 thumping of Botswana and a 3-0 triumph against Cape Verde. The club played great defense under Hassan, going four straight qualifiers without giving up a goal.
With 10 points after four games, Egypt leads Group A in the current World Cup qualifying round. They have shown their outstanding offensive flair and dedication by easily defeating Djibouti (6-0) and almost overcoming Burkina Faso (2-1). Additionally, they maintained their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup by earning a vital point in a 1-1 draw with Guinea-Bissau.
FIFA recognized the strong start made by Vitória, highlighted by an impressive 6-0 victory over Djibouti, where Mohamed Salah scored four goals. However, they pointed out that Hassan’s leadership has brought new energy to the team, mixing discipline with a strong desire to succeed.
At the end of 2024, Egypt’s national team was ranked 33rd in the world. FIFA mentioned that this ranking shows their potential but also increases the pressure to secure a direct spot in the World Cup. The Pharaohs have important qualifying matches in March 2025, including an away game against Ethiopia and a home match against Sierra Leone.
FIFA wrapped up by saying that while the journey to the World Cup is tough, Egypt’s proud history and Hassan’s leadership give hope that they can achieve their goals.
