AFCON 2025: Frank Onyeka Admits Defensive Issues After Super Eagles’ 3–2 Win Against Tunisia
Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has admitted that Nigeria must improve defensively, despite claiming a hard-fought 3–2 win against Tunisia in their second Group C fixture at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Saturday.
Nigeria appeared to be cruising after producing a dominant display that saw them storm into a three-goal lead. Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock just before halftime in the 44th minute, while skipper Wilfred Ndidi made it 2–0 five minutes into the second half. Ademola Lookman added the third goal in the 67th minute, seemingly putting the game beyond Tunisia’s reach.
However, the Super Eagles lost some control late in the match, allowing the Tunisians back into contention. Montassar Talbi pulled one back in the 74th minute with a header from a set piece, setting up a tense final phase as Tunisia pushed for more goals. Nigeria eventually held on to seal the victory and confirm their place in the Round of 16.
After the match, Onyeka expressed his dissatisfaction with the manner in which Nigeria conceded, emphasizing the need for better organization and focus.
“I was disappointed that the Tunisians got the two goals especially the penalty and set piece, these are areas we need to do well.”
