Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has admitted he dreams of a high-scoring victory as the Super Eagles prepare to face Mozambique in Monday night’s Africa Cup of Nations round-of-16 clash in Morocco.

The three-time champions, winners of Group C, are favourites, but Mozambique’s historic run to the knockout stage has added tension to the contest. Mozambique reached the last 16 for the first time after a dramatic 3-2 win over Gabon and narrow losses to Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire.

Chelle said his ambition goes beyond qualification, saying, “My dream is to win with four or five goals and have 80 per cent of possession…”

“But this is the AFCON… Mozambique is a great team…”

The Franco-Malian coach admitted pressure follows him after Nigeria’s 2021 exit, noting, “Since I took this job I have been under pressure…”

He stressed focus remains on the present, adding, “We want to win this game.”

Nigeria, unbeaten in five meetings, face Mozambique at the Stade de Fes on 5 January, with kick-off at 20:00 local time. Nigeria seek performance to reach quarterfinals.
