The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reportedly suspended Egyptian defender Marwan Attia following a controversial incident during Egypt’s semifinal encounter against Senegal at the ongoing AFCON 2025 tournament.

The disciplinary action comes after images from the match went viral on social media, appearing to show Attia making an inappropriate gesture toward the referee. The gesture was widely interpreted as an allegation that the match officials had been bribed to favor Senegal, sparking outrage and widespread debate among fans and analysts.

After reviewing the incident, CAF is understood to have charged the defender with bringing the game into disrepute, resulting in a two-match suspension.

The ban means Attia will miss Egypt’s third-place playoff against Nigeria’s Super Eagles, dealing a setback to the Pharaohs as they prepare for the final game of their AFCON 2025 campaign.
