Despite being the most coveted individual award in African football, the African Player of the Year award has often been marred by controversy, including allegations of bias and under-appreciation of skills. Nigerian striker Ademola Lookman is keen to be named a champion as the 2024 awards ceremony approaches.
Lookman has been in fine form for his club Atalanta and Nigeria. He scored two crucial goals at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, one of which helped Nigeria beat Angola and advance to the semi-finals. As he led Nigeria in goals during the tournament, he was seen as a decisive player.
Lookman played a key part in Atalanta's first-ever club-level success in the 2023–24 UEFA Europa League. He scored three goals against Bayer Leverkusen in the final. He finished the season with 17 goals and 10 assists in all competitions, showcasing his extraordinary talent both at home and in foreign tournaments.
Although it was reported that Achraf Hakimi would receive the trophy after PSG's domestic championship, his early resignation from the 2023 AFCON might work against him. Because the focus will likely be on consistent performances throughout the season, Lookman is a viable contender.
With names like Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, Sammy Kuffour, and Mohamed Aboutrika having previously been denied the award, the CAF committee’s decision tonight will be under intense scrutiny, with many believing Lookman’s season makes him a deserving winner.
