2026 World Cup Qualifiers Playoffs: Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle Says Team Will Miss Ndidi but Must “Manage the Situation” Ahead of DR Congo Final

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has admitted that Nigeria will feel the absence of Wilfred Ndidi in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs against the Democratic Republic of Congo, but insists the team is prepared to adapt.

Ndidi was booked early in Nigeria’s 4–1 extra-time triumph over Gabon in Rabat, a caution that triggered his suspension after accumulating two yellow cards in the playoff series. The Beşiktaş midfielder has been a key figure in Chelle’s setup, making his absence a significant blow heading into the final.

With the midfielder ruled out, the Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, is now left to choose between Raphael Onyedika and Frank Onyeka to fill the gap. Speaking to NFF Media, the coach emphasized Ndidi’s importance but remained confident in the squad’s depth.

“Ndidi is an important player for us,” Chelle said. “His experience, ability and leadership on the pitch are important for this team. But we will manage the situation. We have a large squad of players and we will make changes.”

Despite being unavailable for selection, Ndidi remains with the team, offering support off the field.

“Ndidi is still here with us and will support the team mentally and with his presence,” Chelle added.
