2025 AFCON: Mikel Obi Reveals Inside Corruption Story Behind Super Eagles Selections Ahead of AFCON
Former Super Eagles captain and ex-Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has opened up about controversial influences on the selection of players for Nigeria’s national team ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Mikel shared the insights while drawing comparisons between Nigeria’s current squad and the team managed by the late Stephen Keshi during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. According to Mikel, Keshi faced pressure from powerful individuals who tried to influence his squad choices but ultimately resisted, prioritizing merit and the nation’s interests.
“I remember the late Stephen Keshi when he wanted to make his World Cup selection, called me up and say Mikel, I want to make the squad but these f****s keep calling me trying to influence my decision,” Mikel said on his Obi One Podcast.
“They say I have to pick this player but you know me, I will always do what’s right and I will pick the players that I think deserve and will go and help this country do well in the World Cup.”
Mikel’s comments come shortly after Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle unveiled his 28-man squad for the AFCON tournament. The list has already generated discussion among fans and pundits due to several notable omissions.
Among the players left out are Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Tolu Arokodare, Crystal Palace midfielder Christantus Uche, and Celtic striker Kelechi Iheanacho. These omissions, coupled with Mikel’s revelations, have fueled speculation about external influences on squad selection.
