France's defence faces Italy's revival: France vs Italy prediction — 02.10.2026
France and Italy meet at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis on Friday, October 2, with kick-off scheduled for 20:45 CEST. This is Matchday 3 in UEFA Nations League A Group 1, and the early table already gives the fixture extra weight: France have taken six points from six, while Italy have three after splitting their opening two matches.

France: Zidane starts with two wins, but loses Mbappé
Zinédine Zidane could hardly have asked for better results from his first two competitive matches in charge. France opened the Nations League campaign with a 1-0 victory away to Türkiye, before repeating the same scoreline in Brussels against Belgium. They have therefore collected six points without conceding a goal, even though neither performance turned into an attacking exhibition.
The major setback is Kylian Mbappé's absence. The France captain scored the winner against Türkiye but injured his left knee during the same move and was forced off shortly afterwards. He subsequently returned to Madrid, with the injury ruling him out of the rest of this international window, including the Italy match.
France's depth has already helped Zidane cope. He made nine changes against Belgium and still got the result, with Désiré Doué and Lucas Da Cunha hitting the woodwork before substitute Michael Olise produced the decisive solo goal in the 88th minute. Ousmane Dembélé, Doué, Bradley Barcola and Olise give Zidane plenty of attacking alternatives, although replacing Mbappé's finishing and ability to attack space is a different challenge.
Personnel problems are not limited to Mbappé. Ibrahima Konaté withdrew because of a knee injury and was replaced by Leny Yoro, while Warren Zaïre-Emery was replaced by Maghnes Akliouche.
Italy: Mancini gets exactly the response he needed
Italy's second Roberto Mancini era began badly. The Azzurri were beaten 2-0 by Belgium at the Stadio Olimpico, failing to score and immediately increasing the pressure before a difficult run of away fixtures.
The response in Türkiye was emphatic. Italy won 4-1 in Bursa, with Alessandro Bastoni, Davide Frattesi and Michael Kayode putting them three goals ahead inside the opening 27 minutes before Francesco Pio Esposito added the fourth after half-time. It was a much more aggressive and efficient performance from Mancini's team and restored some confidence ahead of the trip to France.
Mancini also managed his squad specifically with the France game in mind. Nicolò Barella, Gianluca Mancini, Diego Coppola, Daniel Maldini and several other players remained at Coverciano rather than travelling to Türkiye, following a separate training programme ahead of the matches against France and Türkiye.
There are still absences. Federico Dimarco left the camp after failing to recover from an injury and was replaced by Matteo Ruggeri, Bryan Cristante was replaced by Samuele Ricci, while Nicolò Zaniolo has also been ruled out of the France match.
Probable lineups
- France: Maignan — Koundé, Upamecano, Lacroix, Truffert — Camavinga, Koné, Rabiot — Olise, Dembélé, Doué.
- Italy: Donnarumma — Kayode, G. Mancini, Bastoni, Calafiori — Barella, Tonali, Frattesi — Raspadori, Pio Esposito, Kean.
Match facts
- France have won both of their Nations League matches 1-0 and are yet to concede in the competition.
- Michael Olise assisted Mbappé's winner against Türkiye and scored the decisive goal against Belgium.
- Italy followed a 2-0 defeat against Belgium with a 4-1 victory in Türkiye.
- The teams also met twice in the 2024 Nations League: Italy won 3-1 in France before France replied with a 3-1 victory in Milan.
Mbappé's absence could turn a heavyweight clash into a tactical battle
France should control more of the ball at the Stade de France, but Zidane's first two matches have been defined more by defensive control and patience than by relentless attacking football. Both ended 1-0, and losing Mbappé removes the team's most dangerous runner and most reliable finisher.
Italy's four-goal performance in Bursa cannot be ignored, especially with Pio Esposito, Frattesi and Kayode showing how quickly Mancini's team can punish mistakes. However, the situation in Saint-Denis should be very different. Italy are away against the group leaders, and another defeat would leave them six points behind France after only three rounds.
That should encourage a more controlled Italian approach, while France have little reason to force the tempo after their perfect start. Even with plenty of individual quality on both sides, long spells of cautious possession and a relatively small number of clear chances look more likely than an end-to-end contest.
Prediction: Under 2.5 goals.
