Chippa United — Milford: Can the “Chilli Boys” Finally Win at Home?

On 5 September, Chippa United will face Milford in the fifth round of the South African Betway Premiership. The match will kick off at 15:00 local time at Buffalo City Stadium. This will be a special occasion for the hosts: after being forced to relocate for their first home matches, the team will finally return to the Eastern Cape and play in front of their own supporters.

Chippa’s start to the season has been mixed. After four rounds, Brandon Truter’s side are still without a win: two draws to begin with — 0-0 against Golden Arrows and 1-1 against Richards Bay — followed by a painful 3-0 defeat to reigning champions Orlando Pirates and another 1-1 draw with Siwelele. That leaves Chippa with just three points and only two goals scored.
There were, however, some positive signs in the latest game against Siwelele. Chippa opened the scoring in the second half through Azola Matrose, but were unable to hold on to their advantage, with the opponents equalising in the 75th minute. After the match, Truter noted that his team lacked confidence and concentration, particularly when playing under pressure.
Now, the situation should at least change psychologically. Chippa were forced to play their first two nominal home matches outside the Eastern Cape because of problems with the pitches at their usual stadiums. On 5 September, the club will finally return to Buffalo City Stadium, with the coach describing the match as a potential turning point.
However, Milford are far from the easiest opponent for such a test. The newcomers to the top flight have already managed to surprise: after a 2-0 defeat to Orlando Pirates, they beat Siwelele 1-0, followed that up with a 2-1 victory over fellow newcomers Kruger United, and then drew 0-0 with Polokwane City in the fourth round. As a result, Milford have seven points from four matches and have conceded just three goals.
Their defence is currently the visitors’ biggest strength. Milford do not try to control matches constantly, but they know how to stay patient, defend compactly and wait for their opportunity. For Chippa, who have scored just twice in four matches, that represents a serious problem.
Tactically, it would be logical to expect a more aggressive start from the hosts. Chippa have used a 4-3-3 formation in each of their first four matches of the season, and at home they will surely look to press higher and move the ball into the final third more quickly. The main task will be to finally add more threat in attack and avoid turning territorial dominance into pointless possession.
For Milford, a more cautious approach would be ideal. The team have already shown that they can sit back, defend and punish opponents for their mistakes. Seven points from four matches is an excellent return for a newly promoted side, meaning the psychological pressure is clearly greater on Chippa at the moment.
Overall, this promises to be a fairly scrappy encounter. The hosts will receive an emotional boost from finally returning home, but support alone will not guarantee three points. Milford have already shown that they can fight for results even against more experienced opponents.
