Richards Bay and Sekhukhune United meet in the South African Betway Premiership on Saturday, September 19, 2026, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00 local time at Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban. There is an additional storyline surrounding the visitors: Papi Zothwane, who worked at Richards Bay last season, is now in charge of Sekhukhune and will face a club he knows extremely well.

Richards Bay are scoring, but their defence keeps letting them down

Richards Bay's start to the league campaign has been difficult. Ronnie Gabriel's team collected only three points from their first five matches, drawing three and losing two. The encouraging part is that they scored in every one of those games, but the same sequence also produced no clean sheets: six goals scored and eight conceded.

Their home results highlight the problem particularly well. Richards Bay lost 1-2 to Polokwane City, drew 2-2 with Kaizer Chiefs and then suffered another 1-2 defeat against AmaZulu. In the latter game they managed to equalise through Moses Mthembu's penalty, only to concede again two minutes later. Gabriel's side can create enough chances to stay competitive, but maintaining defensive concentration for the full 90 minutes has proved much harder.

Nqaba Xulu has been one of the brightest attacking figures, scoring three goals in five starts, while Mthembu has contributed a goal and two assists. That gives Richards Bay several ways to threaten in transition, but until their defensive structure improves, even productive attacking performances may not translate into victories.

Sekhukhune United have become harder to break down under Zothwane

Sekhukhune made a major coaching change at the beginning of September. Cedric Kaze left the club by mutual agreement on September 1, with Zothwane subsequently taking charge of the technical team. His first two league matches produced a 0-0 draw against TS Galaxy and a 1-1 draw away to Stellenbosch, meaning Sekhukhune conceded only once across those two fixtures.

The Stellenbosch match also brought an encouraging attacking sign. Bethuel Muzeu opened the scoring in the 63rd minute before Sekhukhune conceded a late equaliser. They did not dominate possession or chance creation, but their compact shape again made them difficult to beat, which appears to be Zothwane's immediate priority.

Low-scoring football has been a constant feature of Sekhukhune's season so far. Each of their first six league matches finished with fewer than three goals, and their overall record stands at four goals scored and five conceded. Away from home they have yet to win, but the draw at Stellenbosch represented an improvement after two previous 0-2 league defeats on the road.

Zothwane's knowledge of Richards Bay could also become relevant. He worked as their co-coach before leaving at the end of last season, so he is familiar with many of the players and the team's general strengths and weaknesses. In a match likely to be decided by small tactical details, that familiarity gives Sekhukhune an extra advantage.

Recent meetings point towards another tight contest

There has been very little between these teams recently. Their last two meetings both ended 1-1, while five of the last seven head-to-head encounters produced fewer than three goals. That fits the current profile of Sekhukhune, whose league matches have consistently been cautious and low-scoring.

Richards Bay, however, have been much less reliable defensively this season. They have found the net regularly, but conceding in every league match has repeatedly undone their work in attack. Sekhukhune are not prolific either, so the visitors are unlikely to dominate, but their defensive organisation has improved since the coaching change.

Zothwane's familiarity can make the difference: Richards Bay vs Sekhukhune United prediction

This should be a close and relatively tactical match. Richards Bay have enough attacking quality to cause problems, especially through Xulu and Mthembu, but five league matches without a clean sheet underline their biggest weakness. Sekhukhune, meanwhile, have immediately looked more compact under Zothwane and arrive with an obvious tactical advantage because of their coach's recent history with the opposition.

The visitors' away record means this is far from a risk-free selection, but Sekhukhune currently look like the more structured side. If they maintain the discipline shown in Zothwane's first two matches and take advantage of Richards Bay's recurring defensive mistakes, they have a good chance of securing a narrow victory.

Prediction: Sekhukhune United to win.
