Yamal makes history: Spain's star sets unique record ahead of World Cup final
Spain's 19-year-old winger Lamine Yamal continues to rewrite the history of world football. Taking to the pitch in the starting lineup for the World Cup final, the prodigious talent set two remarkable records in one night.
Yamal became the first player ever to feature in both a European Championship final and a World Cup final before turning 20. The Spanish sensation had already played in the decisive match of the Euros, and now he’s added the biggest stage in world football to his resume.
On top of that, Lamine Yamal, together with his Spain teammate Pau Cubarsí, became one of the youngest footballers ever to start a World Cup final.
Before them, only three teenagers had ever started a World Cup final—Pele in 1958 (17 years and 249 days), Giuseppe Bergomi in 1982 (18 years and 201 days), and Kylian Mbappé in 2018 (19 years and 207 days). Remarkably, each of those players went on to lift the trophy that same year.
