U.S. President Donald Trump wants the new Washington Commanders stadium in the nation’s capital to be named in his honor, ESPN reports. A White House spokesperson revealed that informal discussions have taken place with club owner Josh Harris about naming the new stadium—slated for the site of the old RFK Stadium—after Trump.
“It would be a great name, since it’s President Trump who made the construction of the new stadium possible. This is the president’s wish, and it will likely come to fruition,” said White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt.
The team’s representative declined to comment. However, a source within the organization noted that the club is preparing for Trump’s attendance at the home NFL game against the Detroit Lions.
Recall that construction of the stadium on the site of the old RFK Stadium was approved by the District Council in September, with the club investing $2.7 billion to cover all cost overruns. The 65,000-seat venue will be a centerpiece of the largest economic project in Washington’s history, featuring housing, a sports complex, and retail spaces.
Sources note that Trump is not looking to purchase naming rights or have a sponsor buy them. He wants the stadium to bear his name as a tribute to his role in making the project a reality.
