Former Ghana international Sulley Muntari has criticized the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for its poor handling of the Black Stars’ captaincy during the AFCON 2025 qualifiers.
The controversy began when Thomas Partey was sidelined due to injury. Coach Otto Addo first named Mohammed Kudus as captain for the match against Sudan in October 2024. However, in later games against Angola and Niger, the armband was given to Jordan Ayew instead.
The team was confused by these abrupt changes, which resulted in haphazard performances and, ultimately, Ghana's exclusion from AFCON 2025.
Muntari was unreserved in his criticism:
“It was handled horribly. The Federation is incapable of controlling itself, which is why this occurred. The armband should belong to the most experienced player."
Ghana is now transferring its focus to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March 2024, prompting calls for clearer leadership rules to avoid repeated disturbances in the national squad.
